Closing the Gap: BlendED Learning Basics
How do we support small shifts in practice to best support the thoughtful integration of technology for student-centred learning?

In K-12 education, the shift toward student-centred, blended and online learning will greatly impact teacher practice and instructional strategies.   This session will focus on the small steps we can take to begin to shift teaching and learning to leverage technology to it's fullest capacity:  connecting, collaborating, creating.  The exciting world of new literacies will be explored and time for collaborate planning will be provided!

Open Educational Resources: Challenge for the Future
Open Educational Resources (OER) constitute an important resource with the potential to facilitate the expansion of quality education and learning opportunities worldwide. OER are learning resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits their free use or modification. OER can be full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials or techniques used to support access to knowledge. Mobile computing using the powerful new 3G and 4g phones, tablets and netbooks has opened the door for learners and teachers to access the world’s knowledge from almost anywhere, at anytime. The internet houses the world’s treasure of knowledge. In this context the role of OER in providing learners and teachers with learning content, applications, games etc. is becoming increasingly more relevant. The internet is the world’s intellectual commons and OER renders this knowledge accessible to all. The world’s knowledge is a public good that should be made available to everyone. The free and open sharing of educational resources can serve to promote the building of knowledge societies and the reduction of the knowledge divide that separates nations, as well as the divide within societies themselves.

Status regarding follow up on challenges shared at May’s JTC will be shared (including upcoming exciting changes in PASI). There will also be opportunity for attendees to contribute suggestions for the development of standards, guidelines and quality indicators in online and blended learning.

BOLT Students' Learnings: Personal, Professional, and Practice Based
Through a partnership between the Centre for Distance Education at Athabasca University and the Alberta Distance Learning Centre(ADLC) nine professional learning modules were designed and delivered to a pilot group of ADLC teachers. The Blended and Online Learning and Teaching (BOLT) modules discussed the theory and included experiences of applying flexible learning strategies in various learning spaces. The presenters, including the BOLT pilot students, will summarize the learning experienced in the professional learning modules and how it relates to personal, professional and evidence-based practices of using flexible learning strategies with K-12 learners. By experiencing flexible learning strategies in various learning spaces, these teachers are ready to share their own lived experiences of what it means to learn and teach with digital flexibility now part of their professional repertoire.

Digital LIteracy: What is it and how can we embrace it?
In 2016, there is a massive discrepancy in the Digital and Web Literacy abilities of our students, teachers, parents and educational leaders.Technology can be used in ways to encourage and discourage learning. What distinguishes digital and web literacy in education from just using technology, is the focus on learning. The decision to "use" or "not use" technology is part of digital and web literacy as well - as we consider how to best meets the needs and wants of our learners. In this collaborative and interactive session, participants will be offered examples of evidence of digital and web literacy integration in all learning environments. We will then work together to create a collection of Digital and Web Literacy resources.

State of the Nation: K-12 E-Learning in Canada
Current research in K-12 online learning in Canada has focused on defining distance learning and its current strengths and weaknesses. Yet the proliferation of technologies and digital learning spaces has led to the emergence of new instructional strategies and digital learning practices for teachers in many K-12 classrooms, both online and onsite. Traditional school-based classrooms are incorporating technology-supported open learning options, creating blended learning opportunities where at least part of instruction occurs in a classroom, part online at a distance, both combined with some element of choice in learning for students. For these emerging practices little is known empirically, only anecdotally, as research into these practices has been limited or nonexistent, particularly in Canada.


As you will hear in the authors’ discussion of the 2015 State of the Nation: K-12 E-Learning in Canada report, many provinces and territories in Canada have some reference to distance education in their Education Act or Schools Act; the reference is typically used to describe distance education or to enable the Ministry of Education to create, approve or regulate K-12 distance education. However, with some exceptions, few provinces and territories have any regulations describing online or blended learning. This presentation will describe and discuss this current state of e-learning in Canada and the need for further research and study in the emerging field of K-12 online and blended learning, with a particular focus on understanding the growth in blended learning and varying nature of development of individual programs.
