Open Educational Resources: Challenge for the Future
Open Educational Resources (OER) constitute an important resource with the potential to facilitate the expansion of quality education and learning opportunities worldwide. OER are learning resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits their free use or modification. OER can be full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials or techniques used to support access to knowledge. Mobile computing using the powerful new 3G and 4g phones, tablets and netbooks has opened the door for learners and teachers to access the world’s knowledge from almost anywhere, at anytime. The internet houses the world’s treasure of knowledge. In this context the role of OER in providing learners and teachers with learning content, applications, games etc. is becoming increasingly more relevant. The internet is the world’s intellectual commons and OER renders this knowledge accessible to all. The world’s knowledge is a public good that should be made available to everyone. The free and open sharing of educational resources can serve to promote the building of knowledge societies and the reduction of the knowledge divide that separates nations, as well as the divide within societies themselves.

Teaching Mobile App Development in a School Lab with Zero Cost and Zero Effort
MIT App Inventor 2, is an outstanding tool for teaching and practising. It abstracts away most of the difficulties usually associated with mobile development, and simplifies development intentionally, and visually, into the basic building blocks of computer science.
App Inventor 2 was initially used as a training platform for the students of "Master in Innovation in Technology & Entrepreneurship " of the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Institute of Technology for the past two years (2014-2016) as part of their course entitled "Web Applications Design and Mobile Communications" .
More than 40 students in the past two years tested their skills on Mobile application development having minimum or even none prior programming expertise.
The main objective was the development of professional skills in emerging technologies such as the mobile apps.
Students worked in groups or as individuals after a number of F2F classes in order to develop their final projects.
A number of virtual/blended sessions have been organized between the students' groups and the Instructor, either for mentoring or guidance purposes.
Final projects such as the "Tack my Child " app, the "Course evaluator" or the "Tutor evaluation" have been successfully developed by the students.

The effectiveness of App Inventor 2 as platform for Android application development in a Blended environment have been proved, indicating also the block based programming as an appropriate Instructive approach for audience with no prior programming experience.

It is a strong belief that App Inventor 2 can be successfully used in a Highschool
Labs motivating students to gain programming skills in a Blended Learning environment.

Multiplying OER Impact
Through the Campus Alberta OER Initiative, a media creation project is underway to increase awareness, use, and capacity for OER as part of teacher training for in-service educators (K-12). The resulting podcasts and videos will be offered through Athabasca University's graduate courses MDDE 622 (Openness in Education) or BOLT 676 module (Systems Theory and Learning), part of the Blended and Online Learning and Teaching (BOLT) professional learning modules for in-service teachers and administrators. The media will include podcasts, videos, and pdf transcripts within the 3 areas of Awareness, Use, and Championship of K-12 OER. Because the media will have open licensing, they can be freely shared without copyright infringement This allows for use by K-12 educators within Alberta, Canada, and beyond because they will also be accessible through the BOLT blog. OER development is a growing area within K-12 teacher professional learning that addresses educators' need for flexible learning strategies that are designed, used, contextualized, and shared by practicing teachers. Canadian K-12 OER requires teachers to understand what comprises OER, and how to make, reuse, revise, remix, redistribute and review the growing contributions to OER.

Supporting Inuit Teachers in Job-Embedded Professional Improvement
Inuit teachers working in the Kativik School Board in Nunavik receive their certification through the Office of First Nations and Inuit Education at McGill. Courses are taught in Inuktitut with a McGill consulting instructor. The previous model of course delivery was an intensive 2-week face-to-face session. Participants had little time to reflect on the knowledge or skills they acquired and no opportunity to apply their learning in their practice. We wanted to address this, decrease time away from families, and provide them with technology skills they could use in their teaching and in the preservation and celebration of the Inuit language and culture.
Over the past year 2 years, the Research and Teacher Training Department at the Kativik School Board has developed blended courses that are taught face-to-face for 5 to 8 days and online over 4 to 6 weeks. This has provided the opportunity to redevelop course material from an Inuit perspective in terms of content and approach, re-examining what it means to teach and learn from an Inuit perspective. In the next phase of implementation, we are proposing research that will examine such factors as the roles of on-site instructional coaches and McGill co-instructors, and the effects of tech support offered in Inuktitut and instructional design of the courses for online delivery. We continue to explore solutions to telecommunications challenges. The model is being used to engage Student Counselors, Teacher Training Counselors, and Centre Directors. Adult and Vocational Education programs are being developed. We would like to share what we have learned with educational leaders in indigenous communities.

BOLT Students' Learnings: Personal, Professional, and Practice Based
Through a partnership between the Centre for Distance Education at Athabasca University and the Alberta Distance Learning Centre(ADLC) nine professional learning modules were designed and delivered to a pilot group of ADLC teachers. The Blended and Online Learning and Teaching (BOLT) modules discussed the theory and included experiences of applying flexible learning strategies in various learning spaces. The presenters, including the BOLT pilot students, will summarize the learning experienced in the professional learning modules and how it relates to personal, professional and evidence-based practices of using flexible learning strategies with K-12 learners. By experiencing flexible learning strategies in various learning spaces, these teachers are ready to share their own lived experiences of what it means to learn and teach with digital flexibility now part of their professional repertoire.

Be in the Game: Using a Gamified Mobile App to Teach Entrepreneurship
In 2014, RVS Online selected GoRobos Inc.’s Discover Entrepreneurship! mobile application for its five-credit senior high CTS course in entrepreneurship. The mobile application delivers gamified curriculum, assessments, and a simulated small business environment – students apply learned concepts to build a small business lemonade stand empire. Over 500 RVS Online students have successfully completed this unique online course.

Project Robot: Short Circuits and the Mechanical Teacher
Why teach electronics and robotics? It is not just all in good fun anymore. Technology giants are getting serious about robotics, electronics, and automation. Teachers must prepare students for the employment market not just in the basics of read, write, and math; but also prepare employable students that collaborate with ease, are complex problem-solvers, and work with creative approaches and means. Project-based robotics and electronics competitions engage students to learn and make mistakes on the fly and under highly stressful yet fun, hands-on scenarios. Mechanical teachers - you do not have to be, at first. Teachers will learn to facilitate and inspire students to build, create, and think. I would like to share my experiences with robotics competitions and my online electrotechnology courses. I will talk about Junior High and Elementary CTF courses that are also available online, not only through ADLC but also through other robotics educational platforms.

State of the Nation: K-12 E-Learning in Canada
Current research in K-12 online learning in Canada has focused on defining distance learning and its current strengths and weaknesses. Yet the proliferation of technologies and digital learning spaces has led to the emergence of new instructional strategies and digital learning practices for teachers in many K-12 classrooms, both online and onsite. Traditional school-based classrooms are incorporating technology-supported open learning options, creating blended learning opportunities where at least part of instruction occurs in a classroom, part online at a distance, both combined with some element of choice in learning for students. For these emerging practices little is known empirically, only anecdotally, as research into these practices has been limited or nonexistent, particularly in Canada.


As you will hear in the authors’ discussion of the 2015 State of the Nation: K-12 E-Learning in Canada report, many provinces and territories in Canada have some reference to distance education in their Education Act or Schools Act; the reference is typically used to describe distance education or to enable the Ministry of Education to create, approve or regulate K-12 distance education. However, with some exceptions, few provinces and territories have any regulations describing online or blended learning. This presentation will describe and discuss this current state of e-learning in Canada and the need for further research and study in the emerging field of K-12 online and blended learning, with a particular focus on understanding the growth in blended learning and varying nature of development of individual programs.

As educators we are to guide students as they use technology to:
a. access, share and create knowledge
b. discover, develop and apply competencies

How do we address this with young learners in a distance learning environment?

In our session we will share:

Challenges and successes as we guide students to learn in new ways.

Supporting students to become creators of knowledge.

Applications to share and amplify the learning.

Implementing authentic forms of assessment - shifting agency to the learner

Participants will have opportunity to discuss ideas and share best practices.
Our program uses a variety of digital tools: Moodle, Blackboard Collaborate, Google Applications, Kidblog and ipad apps.

CANCELLED - Blending a Lecture/Lab Class for Pre-Service Teachers
This session will explore the ongoing development of EDU 210 - Introduction to Educational Technology. This is a required course for all Education students at the University of Alberta. The course is offered both online and in a blended format. The focus of the course design is to provide maximum flexibility and personalized learning in terms of time, place, pace and learning style. A combination of project based learning, interactive lecture time, creating smaller class groups within the class and providing significant asynchronous and open supports makes flexible learning possible even in this high enrollment course. Since this is an Education course , the content is driven by both Inspiring Education and The Learning and Technology Policy Framework.

Going Global: Making Classroom Connections Easy
Going Global is a joint initiative started by ADLC, TakingITGlobal and the Centre for Global Education, designed to equip students to respond to the world's greatest challenges through links to cross-curricular classroom activities and extra-curricular collaborations. From Art class to Social Studies to an after school Art/Social Justice club, ADLC students are provided with synchronous and asynchronous opportunities to collaborate with their peers and students from across the planet to address topics like Child Soldiers in Africa, Revolutions in the Middle East, and Climate Change, LIVE from UN conferences.

This sessions will help participants see how they too can participate in Going Global and empower their students to see learning as an opportunity to make a difference.
